Bamboo used for Beppu craft must be carefully selected, cut, treated, split, and shaped before weaving. Depending on the desired object, artisans may use fresh bamboo, dried bamboo, smoked bamboo, or bamboo that has been heat-treated or otherwise processed. The treatment of the bamboo affects its colour, flexibility, strength, and surface texture.
