The development of Beppu as a major hot spring resort in the Meiji period further strengthened the craft. Improved transport, tourism, and trade helped turn bamboo work from a local household craft into a recognized regional industry. In the twentieth century, Beppu bamboo craft increasingly moved beyond utilitarian basketry and became associated with artistic expression, interior design, and exhibition pieces.
