Kaneshige Sōzan (金重素山, born 1949) is a Japanese ceramic artist and master potter of Bizen ware based in Okayama Prefecture. He is part of the Kaneshige family lineage, which has played a central role in the modern history and revival of Bizen ceramics.

Life

Kaneshige Sōzan was born into a prominent Bizen pottery family in Imbe, the historic center of Bizen ware production. He trained within the family kiln tradition, inheriting techniques and aesthetic principles associated with earlier generations of Bizen potters.

Work

Sōzan’s work continues the Bizen tradition of high-fired, unglazed stoneware, characterized by natural ash effects and surface variations produced during wood firing. While rooted in historical forms, his practice includes both functional vessels and sculptural works, reflecting the evolving role of Bizen ceramics in contemporary Japanese craft.

His ceramics demonstrate a range of kiln effects such as hidasuki (fire-marked patterns), natural ash glazing, and subtle color variations resulting from prolonged firing cycles.

Legacy and significance

As a member of the Kaneshige lineage, Sōzan contributes to the preservation and transmission of Bizen ceramic traditions while participating in the broader contemporary ceramics movement. His work illustrates the continuity of regional kiln practices within modern artistic contexts.
