Flag of Saga Prefecture

Saga Prefecture (佐賀県) is located in northwestern Kyūshū, bordered by Fukuoka and Nagasaki and facing both the Sea of Japan and the Ariake Sea. Its fertile plains and mild climate have long supported agriculture, while its coastal position encouraged trade and cultural exchange.

The prefecture’s capital, Saga City, reflects a balance of historical sites and modern development. Saga is historically known for its role in early modern industry and as a center for innovation during the late Edo and Meiji periods.

Culturally, Saga is best known for its outstanding ceramic traditions, which are among the most celebrated in Japan. Towns such as Arita and Imari became world-famous in the 17th century for their porcelain, which was exported widely to Europe and Asia. Saga continues to be a heartland of ceramic artistry, while also preserving festivals and local folk crafts.

Signature Crafts of Saga Prefecture

  • Arita ware (有田焼) – fine porcelain, among the most famous Japanese ceramics, exported worldwide.
  • Imari ware (伊万里焼) – richly decorated porcelain, closely associated with Arita.
  • Karatsu ware (唐津焼) – rustic stoneware used in tea ceremonies, prized for its natural simplicity.
  • Local folk crafts – including bamboo work and textiles rooted in regional traditions.
