During the Muromachi period, bamboo baskets were widely used by travelling merchants and peddlers. The need for strong, light, and practical containers encouraged the development of local bamboo-working skills. By the Edo period, Beppu had become known as a hot spring destination. Visitors who came for extended stays at Beppu Onsen used bamboo utensils in daily life, and bamboo goods also became popular souvenirs.
