Beppu bamboo craft is mainly made from high-quality madake bamboo and is known for its refined hand-weaving techniques. The craft is traditionally based on eight fundamental weaving patterns, which may be combined into more than 200 variations. In 1979, Beppu bamboo craft was designated as a Traditional Craft of Japan by the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry.
