'''Kakuzeraki Ryūichi''' (隠崎隆一; born 1950) is a Japanese ceramic artist associated with [[Bizen ware]], known for his innovative approach to traditional wood-fired ceramics. While grounded in the techniques and materials of Bizen pottery, he is recognized for expanding the expressive and sculptural possibilities of the tradition in contemporary ceramic art.

== Early life and training ==
Kakuzeraki Ryūichi was born in [[Okayama Prefecture]], Japan, a region historically linked to Bizen ware production. He developed an early interest in ceramics and pursued formal training in the field, studying both traditional techniques and modern ceramic art.

Unlike potters born into established Bizen families, Kakuzeraki represents a generation of artists who entered the tradition through formal education and independent study. He trained under established ceramic masters and gained practical experience in wood-firing techniques central to Bizen ware.

== Artistic style ==
Kakuzeraki’s work is noted for its dynamic forms and experimental kiln effects. His ceramics are characterized by:

* Bold, sculptural vessel forms
* Dramatic surface textures created through wood-firing
* Expressive use of ash deposits and flame patterns
* Exploration of asymmetry and movement in form

While he works within the technical framework of Bizen ware, his pieces often blur the boundary between functional pottery and sculptural art.

== Contribution to contemporary Bizen ware ==
Kakuzeraki Ryūichi has contributed to the evolution of Bizen ware by demonstrating how traditional methods can support contemporary artistic expression. His contributions include:

* Expanding the sculptural language of Bizen ceramics
* Promoting wood-fired pottery in modern art contexts
* Exhibiting in Japan and internationally
* Inspiring younger ceramic artists to explore the expressive potential of traditional techniques

His work reflects a broader trend in Japanese ceramics toward integrating craft traditions with contemporary art practices.

== Legacy ==
Kakuzeraki Ryūichi is regarded as an important contemporary figure in Bizen-related ceramics. His work illustrates how artists outside hereditary lineages can meaningfully engage with and reinterpret traditional craft practices.

Through his innovative approach, he has helped broaden global appreciation for Bizen ware as both a historical tradition and a living, evolving art form.
