== Overview ==
'''Mino Washi''' (美濃和紙) is a traditional Japanese paper craft centered in present-day Gifu Prefecture. Renowned for its thinness, strength, and even fiber distribution, Mino Washi has historically been valued for writing, printing, and architectural applications. Its balance of lightness and durability has made it one of the most widely used and enduring forms of handmade paper in Japan.

== Early Formation ==
The origins of Mino Washi are commonly traced to the Nara period, when papermaking spread from state and religious centers into provincial regions. Favorable natural conditions, particularly clean river water and access to kōzo fibers, supported the early development of papermaking communities in the Mino area. By the Heian period, Mino paper was already recognized for its clarity and surface quality.

== Medieval Expansion ==
During the Kamakura and Muromachi periods, Mino Washi production expanded in scale and consistency. Paper from the region was used for official records, religious texts, and literary manuscripts. Its reliability made it suitable for both institutional and private use, and it circulated widely beyond its place of origin.

== Edo Period Consolidation ==
The Edo period marked a peak in the production and distribution of Mino Washi. It became one of the principal papers used for shōji screens, publishing, and everyday writing. Organized production systems allowed for large-scale output while maintaining material standards, and the craft became a cornerstone of the local economy.

== Modern Continuity ==
Industrial papermaking introduced during the Meiji period led to a decline in handmade paper production nationwide. Mino Washi endured through adaptation, sustained demand for architectural paper, and later cultural preservation initiatives. In the 20th century, efforts to protect traditional papermaking ensured the survival of the craft.
