==Prezentare generală==
'''Neri-gawa''' se referă la un meșteșug tradițional japonez al pielii, axat pe producerea de piele întărită și stabilă în formă, prin prelucrarea, modelarea și consolidarea intensivă a materialului. Apreciat din punct de vedere istoric pentru rezistența, rigiditatea și rezistența sa la impact, Neri-gawa ocupă o poziție distinctă în cadrul prelucrării japoneze a pielii, fiind un meșteșug definit prin transformarea proprietăților fizice, mai degrabă decât prin finisajul suprafeței sau ornamentul.

==Dezvoltare istorică==
===Apariție timpurie și contexte marțiale===

Its development coincided with the refinement of Japanese armor systems, in which materials were carefully selected and combined to balance mobility, protection, and durability. Leather that could be shaped and then fixed into hardened forms offered artisans a versatile solution, particularly for curved or articulated components.

===Edo Period Stabilization===
During the Edo period, when large-scale warfare declined, the craft did not disappear but instead stabilized within regulated production environments. Armor continued to be produced for status, ceremonial, and hereditary purposes, preserving demand for hardened leather components.

<div lang="en" dir="ltr" class="mw-content-ltr">
At the same time, Neri-gawa techniques were applied to non-military objects requiring rigidity, including cases, containers, and protective coverings. The craft thus transitioned from a battlefield necessity to a specialized material tradition maintained through institutional continuity.

==Materials and Craft Practice==
===Material Selection===
Neri-gawa depends on leather capable of undergoing intensive mechanical manipulation without tearing or losing structural coherence. Thickness, fiber density, and uniformity are essential, as the hardening process amplifies both strengths and flaws within the material.

<div lang="en" dir="ltr" class="mw-content-ltr">
Artisans selected hides with sufficient body to hold form once shaped, while avoiding excessive brittleness that would lead to cracking under stress.

===Hardening and Shaping===
The defining characteristic of Neri-gawa lies in the controlled hardening of leather. Through repeated working, compression, and shaping—often combined with moisture control—the leather’s fibers are compacted and set into rigid configurations.

<div lang="en" dir="ltr" class="mw-content-ltr">
This process allows leather to function as a semi-structural material. Once hardened, it can be cut, drilled, and assembled with other components, integrating seamlessly into complex objects such as armor or reinforced gear.

==Objects and Uses==
Historically, Neri-gawa was most prominently used in armor construction, including helmet elements, torso reinforcements, guards, and internal structural parts not intended for visual prominence. Its strength-to-weight ratio made it especially valuable in articulated systems where flexibility and rigidity had to coexist.
</div>

<div lang="en" dir="ltr" class="mw-content-ltr">
Beyond armor, hardened leather found use in protective cases, transport containers, and equipment exposed to repeated impact or abrasion. In these contexts, the material’s durability outweighed aesthetic considerations.

==Aesthetic Characteristics==
Visually, Neri-gawa is restrained and utilitarian. Surfaces are typically plain, with minimal emphasis on decorative finish. The craft’s aesthetic identity is instead expressed through form precision, edge control, and the coherence of shaped volumes.
</div>

<div lang="en" dir="ltr" class="mw-content-ltr">
This subdued appearance aligns with broader Japanese craft values in which technical mastery may be intentionally understated, especially in components designed to serve structural rather than symbolic roles.
</div>

==Cultural and Ethical Context==
As with other leather crafts in Japan, Neri-gawa is inseparable from histories of regulated labor and social marginalization. The material’s association with warfare and protection contrasts with the limited recognition afforded to those who produced it.
</div>

<div lang="en" dir="ltr" class="mw-content-ltr">
From a contemporary perspective, documenting Neri-gawa requires balancing acknowledgment of its technical ingenuity with sensitivity to the social structures that shaped its production and transmission.

==Legacy and Contemporary Relevance==
Neri-gawa is rarely practiced today as a distinct craft, largely due to changes in military technology and material science. However, its legacy persists in museum collections, conservation research, and historical reconstructions of armor and equipment.

Within Craftpedia, Neri-gawa serves as a key example of Japanese material adaptation: demonstrating how artisans transformed organic materials to meet demanding functional criteria, and how craft knowledge can persist long after its original context has disappeared.
